Activity: The filtering process
Practice Assignment
Case study: Redesigning the meal planning app
The challenge
The development team of a popular meal planning app faced a challenge: users were finding it difficult to discover and save recipes that fit their dietary preferences and cooking habits. The team decided to focus on improving the app's recipe discovery and saving features to enhance user satisfaction and engagement.
The ideation process
To tackle this challenge, the team organized a series of ideation sessions. They employed various techniques, including brainstorming and sketching, to generate ideas. One of the key techniques they used was called rapid sketching, where team members sketch eight different solutions in five minutes. This exercise generated a wide range of ideas, from personalized recipe recommendations to collaborative meal planning features.
The selected ideas
After reviewing the ideas generated during the ideation sessions, the team decided to focus on two main enhancements. First, they introduced a personalized recipe recommendation feature that leveraged user preferences and cooking habits to suggest relevant recipes. Second, they added a collaborative meal planning feature that allowed users to plan meals together with friends or family members.
Testing and refinement
The team developed prototypes of these features and conducted usability tests with a group of users. The feedback was positive, with users expressing excitement about the new features. However, they also provided valuable suggestions for improvement, such as adding more customization options for recipe recommendations and simplifying the collaborative meal planning interface.
Conclusion
Through the ideation process and user feedback, the development team was able to identify key enhancements that addressed user needs and improved the overall user experience of the meal planning app. The ideation techniques helped the team generate creative solutions and select the most impactful features to implement, resulting in a more engaging and user-friendly app.

Project: Design a solution for your target audience's needs
Practice Assignment
Project scenario
Welcome back to The Grocery Shopping App capstone project! In this next phase of our journey, we will pick up where we left off, mirroring the real-world process of UX design. In the real world, you would have planned user research, executed the research, and analyzed the output of the research, resulting in a summary of the users’ needs. Building on this foundation, we will now focus on translating these user needs into actionable design decisions that will shape the future of our grocery shopping app. This phase will be crucial in refining our understanding of the target audience and ensuring that our app meets their needs effectively.
Objective
The purpose of this project is to practice design ideation techniques to address a specific need identified for the provided user personas.
Instructions
Before you begin, open the The Grocery Shopping App Template PowerPoint file that you’ve saved previously to a location that is easily accessible. If you have not yet downloaded the PowerPoint file, do so now. You will continue to add to this PowerPoint file throughout the certificate and at the end, this will be your completed portfolio. There is guidance on what to include in the beginning slides and template slides towards the bottom of the PowerPoint deck. Use the completed portfolio to showcase your work and share with potential employers, demonstrating your skills and experience in UX/UI design. Make sure to click and expand each new step in the instructions as you go through.
Step 1: Examine the user needs summary
Carefully examine the summary of user needs identified during the Needs assessment through research planning project (provided below). These insights, along with a review of the personas, will serve as the foundation for the next steps in the design process, helping you make informed decisions to create a user-centered grocery shopping app.
If you haven’t done so already, download the user persona cards and save the PDF somewhere where it is easily accessible. You will continue to use the user persona cards throughout the certificate.
Summary of user needs
Reduced time commitment: Users want to streamline the grocery shopping process to save time in busy schedules.
Meal planning support: Users struggle to plan healthy meals throughout the week and need tools or resources to simplify this task.
Recipe inspiration: Users desire easy-to-follow, delicious, and healthy recipe options that fit their dietary preferences.
Efficient shopping: Users seek a way to avoid impulse purchases and make efficient grocery shopping decisions based on a pre-defined plan.
Budget-conscious options: Users want to find affordable and healthy meal options that fit their budget.
Seamless purchasing: Users need a way to seamlessly purchase groceries directly within the app, eliminating the need for a separate shopping trip.
Step 2: Select a user need
Choose a specific user need from the summary of user needs identified that you find most interesting or challenging to address. Consider the personas and the insights gathered from user research to identify a need that aligns with the goals of the grocery shopping app and has the potential to make a significant impact on the user experience. Selecting a user need to focus on will guide your design decisions and help you create a solution that meets the needs of your target audience effectively.
25.Which user need did you choose? Why do you feel this is a worthwhile pain point to focus on?
I chose the user need for Meal planning support. This is a crucial pain point because many users struggle to maintain a healthy, balanced diet due to the time-consuming and complex process of planning meals for the week. Addressing this need would significantly improve the app’s value by helping users make better meal decisions, save time, and even align their grocery shopping with a more structured and budget-friendly plan. Since meal planning is a recurring challenge for busy users, creating an effective solution would enhance the overall user experience, foster engagement, and lead to higher satisfaction.
26. What is the purpose of using ideation techniques in the design process? Select the best answer.
- To conduct user testing
- To develop the final product
- To finalize the design solution
- To generate a wide range of creative ideas
27. Which ideation techniques did you choose to use to create potential solutions? Why did you choose those techniques?
I chose Brainstorming and Rapid Sketching to generate potential solutions. Brainstorming encourages the team to think freely and come up with a wide variety of ideas, which is important for fostering creativity and exploring different approaches. Rapid Sketching, on the other hand, allows for quick visual representation of ideas, making it easier to communicate and iterate upon different solutions. These techniques are complementary: brainstorming generates diverse ideas, while sketching helps visualize and refine them into actionable designs.
28. Why is it important to evaluate and select a solution idea during the design process? Select the best answer.
- To ensure the chosen idea is the least expensive to ensure a higher profit
- To make the process more client-focused
- To identify the idea with the most potential to meet user needs
- To eliminate all other ideas
29. What solution did you choose to build a wireframe for?
I chose to build a wireframe for the meal planning support feature. This feature would help users plan meals for the week based on their dietary preferences and available ingredients, integrating it with recipe suggestions and a shopping list that users can generate and adjust as needed. This solution addresses the core pain point of simplifying the meal planning process and aligns with users’ goals of efficiency and healthy eating.
